Iraq's new president says he hopes his country will be ready for American and coalition troops to withdraw in two years.
Jalal Talabani told CNN that Iraq needs the foreign soldiers until it is able to rebuild its own military forces. He says Iraq should be able to do that within two years. Shi'ite militants have recently demonstrated to demand U.S. troops pull out immediately.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry says a previously unknown militant group kidnapped a member of its embassy staff in Baghdad. It says the missing man contacted Pakistan's embassy and told officials there he has not been harmed.
And there is still no new word about three Romanian journalists and an Iraqi assistant kidnapped two weeks ago near Baghdad. The fate of an Iraqi general abducted last week is also unclear.
