Burma's military rulers have asked Thailand to send an estimated one million immigrant workers home so they can be officially documented by Rangoon.
Bangkok registered immigrant workers from Burma, Laos and Cambodia in 2004, giving them one year work permits that expire on June 30th. The workers will then have to undergo verification of their nationality by Thai officials and apply for identification documents.
Burma says it wants its own officials to check the workers so they can issue passports and permits to work outside the country.
Thai officials are expected to oppose the request as too disruptive to the Thai economy.
