Asian stock markets closed mixed on Wednesday, with the key market in Tokyo falling on diplomatic tensions between Japan and China.
The Nikkei Stock Average lost 33 points to finish at 11,638. The Nikkei has fallen two percent so far this week.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index ended at a three-week high of 13,800. For the day it was up 142 points or one percent.
In the region's other big market, Singapore, the Straits Times index ended virtually unchanged at 2,169.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bombay, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Taipei and Wellington. The markets in Manila, Seoul and Sydney all were lower. Bangkok was closed for the traditional Thai New Year holiday.
In late afternoon Tokyo currency trading, the dollar was selling at 107-point-26 yen, down point-five yen from late Tuesday.
And in Hong Kong, the price of gold fell 20 cents an ounce to close at 428 dollars, 95 cents an ounce.
