Tokyo's Nikkei index lost 104 points-one percent to finish at 10,984. The average gained 127 points-one percent on Wednesday.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 96 points to end at 13,597. On Wednesday the Hang Seng gained 58 points.
In the region's other big market, Singapore, the Straits Times index gained eight points to close at 2,138.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bombay, Seoul, and Taipei. Markets were lower in Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Shanghai, Sydney and Wellington.
In late afternoon Tokyo currency trading, the dollar was selling at 106.97 yen, up 0.05 yen from the same time Wednesday.
In Hong Kong, the price of gold rose 75 cents to close at 433 dollars, 25 cents an ounce.
