A group of international dignitaries has issued an open letter of support for detained Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Thirteen people signed the letter, including Aung San Suu Kyi's fellow Nobel peace laureates the Dalai Lama and South African F.W. de Klerk.
The letter denounced Burma's military rulers for denying her the basic right to speak, and hailed her for being an inspiration for civil society.
The signees are part of the Shared Concern Initiative, an informal group of political, religious and intellectuals leaders dedicated to working for human rights.
Others who signed the letter include South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Czech President Vaclav Havel and U.S. financier George Soros.
