13 May 05: Asian Markets Close Mostly Lower


Asian stock markets closed mostly lower today-Friday, with the key market in Tokyo falling on an overnight drop on Wall Street.

Tokyo's Nikkei index declined for the fifth straight session, losing a quarter of 1% 29 points to close at 11,049.

Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, lost 0.7% 101 points to finish at 13,867.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei and Wellington. Prices dropped in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore and Sydney. India's key Sensex index was little changed in Bombay.

The U.S. dollar was quoted at 106.91 yen in Tokyo, up 0.71 yen from late Thursday in Tokyo, and above its late Thursday New York level of 106.75 yen.

The price of gold in Hong Kong fell four dollars and 20 cents to close at 421 dollars and 75 cents an ounce.
