Asian stock markets closed mostly lower Monday, with the key market in Tokyo falling below the 11,000 mark.
Tokyo's Nikkei index fell nearly 1% (102 points), to close at 10,947. The Nikkei slipped a fraction of one percent on Friday.
Hong Kong's markets were closed Monday for a holiday.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Seoul, Wellington and Bombay.
Markets closed lower in Taipei, Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta and Manila.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 107.64 yen in Tokyo, up 0.73 yen from late Friday in Tokyo, and above its late Friday New York level of 107.37 yen.
