Burma's military government has promoted Prime Minister Soe Win from the rank of lieutenant general to general.
There was no official announcement of the move. But a state-run newspaper-Myanma AhlinTuesday reported about a tree-planting ceremony attended by Soe Win's wife. The article refers to his new rank.
Soe Win took over as prime minister for General Khin Nyunt, who was fired last year for alleged corruption and insubordination.
Some opposition leaders accuse Soe Win of organizing an attack on pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her entourage in northern Burma two years ago. She has been detained ever since that attack.
