Tokyo's Nikkei index gained 29 points to finish at 11,577. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong closed 29 points higher at 14,190.
The price of gold in London is 437 dollars and 30 cents an ounce, up 20 cents from late Wednesday.
The dollar in London was mixed against other major currencies.
