U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her French counterpart have called on Syria to respect a UN resolution calling for a full withdrawal from Lebanon and an end to foreign interference in the country
Ms. Rice and Philippe Douste-Blazy discussed the issue today-Thursday on the sidelines of the G-8 foreign ministers meeting in London.
Syria says it completed the withdrawal of its troops and intelligence personnel from Lebanon in April.
But a senior U.S. State Department official, who spoke in London on condition of anonymity, said the United States is certain that Syrian intelligence agents remain in Lebanon and are creating instability.
He said Washington is "extremely concerned" about the situation in Lebanon in the wake of recent political assassinations.
A top anti-Syrian politician George Hawi was killed Tuesday, and a prominent anti-Syrian journalist Samir Kassir was killed earlier this month.
