Burmese Women: 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005


Four Burmese women living in exile are among the nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

The Burmese nominees - Cynthia Maung, Charm Tong, Naw Zipporah Sein and Naw Paw Lu Lu - are among those chosen by a group known as "1,000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005."

The Swiss-based organization's stated goal is to demonstrate "how impressively and tirelessly women are working and struggling all over the world against poverty and violence, and for justice, education, political rights and security."

Looking for peace women in the Mekong Region, Project Coordinator Supawadee Petrat said, "Most of them working on different issues, like education, children's rights, women's rights, violence against women, trafficking in women and eradication of poverty."
