Gunmen in Baghdad have kidnapped Egypt's top diplomat to Iraq, just weeks after his arrival. Witnesses say Ihad al-Sherif was driving alone Saturday evening when gunmen in two cars intercepted and beat him before shoving him into the trunk of a car.
Mr. al-Sherif arrived in Baghdad shortly before Cairo announced it would be the first Arab nation to establish full diplomatic ties with the new Iraqi government. Also Sunday, news reports say several attacks across the country have killed several Iraqis.
Meanwhile, Iraqi officials acknowledged they are looking into allegations that some of Iraq's embattled security forces have carried out unlawful arrests and tortured insurgent suspects.
Britain's Observer newspaper reported it has photos of suspected militants who were beaten by police and said British officials had raised concerns about the incidents "at the highest levels" in Iraq.
