Western news media say U.S. troops have rescued an American soldier who had been missing in eastern Afghanistan since Tuesday.
The networks, quoting U.S. officials, say the Special Forces soldier evaded the enemy until his rescue on Sunday. There is no word on the other members of the soldier's team.
They went missing Tuesday, and the U.S. helicopter sent to rescue them was shot down by suspected Taleban militants, killing all 16 U.S. troops on board.
Meanwhile, suspected Taleban fighters on Sunday killed a pro-government Islamic cleric in southern Afghanistan. Local officials say gunmen ambushed the cleric Mawlavi Mohammad Nabi Masah as he was leaving home near Kandahar city.
He later died of his wounds at the U.S. military hospital in Kandahar.
