U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in China, the first stop of an Asian tour expected to be dominated by efforts to persuade North Korea to return to talks on its nuclear program.
Ms. Rice says she plans to ask Chinese leaders how to restart the stalled disarmament talks. She said the United States is committed to "keeping the doors open" so North Korea can rejoin the talks, but says Washington has set no deadline for those meetings to resume.
Ms. Rice says she will also discuss the human rights situation in China, Tibet and the status of the Dalai Lama.
After China, Ms. Rice is scheduled to visit Thailand to assess tsunami reconstruction efforts there, and then go on to Japan and South Korea.
