The press freedom groups Reporters Without Borders and Burma Media Association are protesting the arrest of a Burmese political cartoonist who is also a member of the political party National League for Democracy.
The groups released a statement Tuesday saying Chit Swe was arrested during an NLD meeting at his home July 12, near Rangoon.
The statement said he was one of at least a dozen democracy activists arrested in the past two weeks.
It said charges against him will be announced on July 25. The statement says he could face a heavy prison sentence or a ban on the publishing of his cartoons.
The statement says Chit Swe's cartoons illustrate Burma's socio-economic problems and have been carried by two Rangoon financial magazines as well as several other publications.
