Nang Hseng Noung, Presidium member of the Women League of Burma testified in the Italian Senate Hearing on Burma on July 21. She appealed Italian government to put pressure on the Burmese military regime, both nationally and as part of the European Union.
Her trip to Rome coincides with a photo exhibition "Burma: Lost Paradise." A new show jointly sponsored by Rome city council and Italy Amnesty International aims to raise awareness of reported human rights abuses in Burma.
She describes, "It opens with an introduction to the historical background in Burma touching on the coup in 1962, which saw the start of an oppressive military regime, and moving through the violent repression of protests in 1988 until the present day. A small section is devoted to the Nobel Peace Laureate and leader of the opposition, Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest or in prison for most of the last 16 years."
