British PM Announces New Measures Against Extremists

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced new measures to fight extremism following last month's deadly terrorist attacks in London.

In London today - Friday, Mr. Blair said authorities will deny asylum to anyone with terror links, and that foreigners who advocate violence or preach hatred could be deported. British nationals could be imprisoned.

He said the government also may review its human rights legislation. Britain, as a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights, cannot deport people to a country where they could be tortured or killed.

Mr. Blair said the extremist groups Hizb-ut-Tahrir and Al-Muhajiroun also will be banned. But a Hizb-ut-Tahrir spokesman said his group, which advocates the creation of an Islamic state in Central Asia, is non-violent and will fight the ban in court.

Members of the Islamic community have expressed concern that Muslims will be alienated and unfairly targeted.

The July 7th bombings in London killed 56 people, including four attackers. An attempt to bomb the city July 21st failed.
