Burma asks UN to Reconsider Cutting Aid Funds

Burma is asking the United Nations Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria to reconsider its decision to cut funding to the country.

Last week the Global Fund said it was cutting funding to Burma because of new government travel restrictions on aid workers.

But in a statement issued today-Tuesday, Burma's Country Coordinating Mechanism said the agency should reconsider in light of its moral obligations to people everywhere who are suffering from illness.

Global Fund officials have said they regret the funding cut, but can not do their work if they are unable to properly supervise aid programs.

Reports say Burma has hundreds of thousands of people infected with HIV/AIDS, one of the highest tuberculosis infection rates in the world, and thousands of deaths each year from malaria.
