Britain's opposition Conservative Party has called on Prime Minister Tony Blair to support U.S. efforts to bring Burma before the U.N. Security Council next month.
A Conservative Party news release today-Saturday printed a letter from Liam Fox, the party's spokesman on foreign relations, sent to Mr. Blair asking him to issue a statement in support of the initiative to bring Burma to the Security Council agenda.
Mr. Fox also asked for support of a resolution that would outline the major reasons for Security Council intervention.
He listed the criteria for Security Council review as "the overthrow of a democratic government, conflict among factions, human rights and humanitarian violations, refugee outflows and other... issues such as drug trafficking and HIV / AIDS."
