Burma has denounced a U.S. report accusing the military-ruled country of failing to meet its obligations in the fight against drugs.
A statement in the New Light of Myanmar newspaper calls the report a slanderous and negative campaign against Burma, and says the country cannot combat the drug trade alone.
The statement says Burma had brought about a significant reduction in illicit production of opium during its first five-year phase of a drug eradication plan.
In the annual U.S. drug report to Congress, released on September 15th, the White House said Burma and Venezuela had "failed demonstrably" to adhere to their obligations under international anti-narcotics agreements.
