Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar visited Burma Monday to discuss bilateral and regional issues with the country's military rulers.
Mr. Syed met with General Than Shwe, as well as Prime Minister General Soe Win.
Mr. Syed told reporters that he discussed the East Asian Summit, ASEAN, and development.
Malaysia was a strong advocate for Burma's membership in ASEAN in 1997.
Burma has been ruled by the military since 1962. In 1990, the opposition National League for Democracy won general elections to lead the country, but the military junta did not allow it to take power. The party's leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is currently under house arrest in Rangoon.
