Malaysia's Foreign Minister says Burma's military government wants to proceed cautiously with democratic reforms but does not want to be pressured by other nations.
Syed Hamid Albar spoke today-Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur after returning from a visit to Burma that included meetings with several top Burmese officials.
He said officials with Burma's government told him that the military junta wants to ensure that the environment is conducive for democracy. Mr. Syed Hamid added that officials told him they don't want "the situation in Iraq" to occur there.
Burma has long been criticized by numerous countries and international organizations for failing to implement democratic reform --- and continuing to detain democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.
