A United Nations rights official has cautioned the international community against its tough approach to Burma, saying that toughness will not help resolve the standoff.
Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the special human rights envoy for Burma, said Friday that the West is using what he called "megaphone diplomacy" with Burma's military rulers.
He said if the tactic is continued, he sees no reason for optimism.
Mr. Pinheiro made his comments one day after delivering a report to the U.N. General Assembly, in which he said Burma's military rulers are driving the country into further isolation.
A Burmese foreign affairs official U Win Mra condemned the report, saying it lacks objectivity and intrudes on the internal domestic politics of his country.
