A senior Malaysian lawmaker has compared Burma's military junta to the regimes of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin and condemned nations that trade with Rangoon.
Nazri Aziz, a senior minister in Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's cabinet, told a meeting in Kuala Lumpur Friday that Burma must be pressured to conform to international standards.
Lawmakers from Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand are attending the two-day conference to discuss how to improve the political and human rights situation in Burma.
Mr. Nazri said the junta's extended house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi "reminds us of the days of Hitler and Stalin."
Malaysian lawmaker Zaid Ibrahim called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to review its principle of non-interference in member's internal affairs since the consequences of Burma's behavior affect the whole region.
