Embassies Can Move to New Burma Capital in Two Years

Burma's military government has told foreign diplomats that their countries can start building embassies in the country's new capital in two years.

Protocol chief Thura Aung Htet said Friday the government is preparing land for embassies and UN organizations in the new administrative capital of Pyinmana, nearly 400 kilometers north of Rangoon.

The Burmese diplomat said in a meeting with foreign officials that it would take two more years to complete construction of government infrastructure, including roads and water supply. He said foreign missions could start building embassies in Pyinmana after December of 2007.

Burma's junta began moving its government ministries to Pyinmana on November sixth.

Some analysts say the move is being driven by government fears of a U.S. invasion, while others say it was prompted by concerns over possible internal unrest.
