The U.S. Navy has turned over to Japanese police a 21-year-old American sailor authorities say confessed to killing a Japanese woman.
Earlier today-Saturday, a Japanese court issued an arrest warrant for Seaman William Reese, a crewman on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, on robbery-murder charges.
Navy spokesman Commander John Wallach said the sailor was taken to a local jail early Saturday evening.
The U.S. Navy said the suspect had been held at the Yokosuka Navy Base south of Tokyo, where Japanese investigators questioned him.
Authorities say the victim, 56-year-old Yoshie Sato, was beaten Tuesday during an apparent robbery in Yokosuka. She later died of internal injuries.
