Health officials in Turkey say a 12-year-old girl with symptoms of bird flu has died.
Authorities in the eastern city of Van said on Sunday they were awaiting test results on Fatma Ozcan to confirm the cause of death. She had been hospitalized along with her five-year-old brother for several days. The brother is reported in serious condition.
Eighteen people have tested positive so far for the H5N1 virus in Turkey, including three children from the same family who died near Van last week.
Those deaths were the first reported bird flu fatalities outside eastern Asia, where more than 70 infected people have died since 2003.
World Health Organization officials say there is still no evidence that the virus spreads from person-to-person.
