Official sources in Burma and India say India's president plans to travel to Burma.
Indian authorities say President Abdul Kalam will visit Burma from March eighth to the 10th. Burmese state media today did not specify the date of the visit but said Mr. Kalam would arrive sometime in the near future.
Mr. Kalam will be traveling at the invitation of Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Burma.
The trip signals India's interest in developing stronger trade ties with the isolated nation, which has come under criticism for alleged human rights abuses.
Mr. Kalam's visit will be the first to Burma by an Indian head of state.
