The local Red Cross and private television stations say an oil pipeline in an industrial zone blew up.
Witnesses say a huge column of smoke can be seen from the center of Lagos, rising from the vicinity of the explosion.
Nigerian government officials have not yet been able to confirm the reported death toll.
