Burmese Authorities Burn $50 Million Worth of Confiscated Drugs

Burmese officials have set fire to confiscated drugs with a reported street value of nearly 50 million dollars.

The burning ceremony took place Sunday at a location in northeastern Shan state. Officials say the drugs include thousands of kilograms of opium.

Burma is the world's second-largest producer of opium. Some of the confiscated drugs were reported bound for Australia.

National police chief Major General Khin Yi said at the burning ceremony that Burma's military government is making efforts to eradicate drugs and cooperate with neighboring countries.

Information for this report is provided by AP and AFP.
