Family and supporters of jailed student activist Thet Win Aung have attended his funeral in central Burma, following his death in prison earlier this week.
Thet Win Aung's father and other family members traveled to the city of Mandalay for the ceremony at Kyarnikan cemetery on Tuesday. The family said an older brother Pyone Cho could not attend because authorities have detained him for political activities.
Family members said prison officials notified them Monday about Thet Win Aung's death, possibly from a heart attack.
Human rights activists claim that Thet Win Aung could have been tortured. They are demanding an investigation into his death.
In Australia, Prime Minister John Howard called for a probe into the death and the release of all political prisoners in Burma.
