Human Rights Watch Report: Bangladesh Mistreats Burmese Refugees

An international human rights group has released a new report alleging that Muslim ethnic refugees from Burma are being mistreated in Bangladesh.

The Human Rights Watch report says there are about 250,000 Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh, and that many of them are mistreated by Bangladeshi authorities who want them out of their country.

The group says Bangladeshi authorities have destroyed a refugee camp, refuse to build housing structures for refugees, and insist on classifying exile-seekers as undocumented people, instead of refugees.

The report also says the Rohingya have limited access to food and social services. Human Rights Watch says there are reports of sexual violence against women who live in the camps.

More than 250,000 Rohingya from western Burma were forced into Bangladesh by the Burmese military in 1992 during a brutal ethnic cleansing campaign.
