Amnesty international says it is concerned about reports of an attack on Burmese human rights activists.
Burmese media report the two activists (Maung Maung Lay and Myint Naing) were beaten by dozens of people as they left a village in Hinthada (Irrawaddy division) on Wednesday. Reports say the two were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Amnesty said Friday the pair had been conducting activities to raise awareness about human rights standards and were members of the Human Rights Defenders and Promoters organization.
The rights group called on Burmese authorities to investigate the attack and bring those who carried it out to justice. It also called on the government to protect the victims and witnesses of the incident from intimidation, threats or violence.
