Burmese police say a ferry has collided with a passenger boat in a canal near Rangoon, killing five people.
Police said today that the ferry was carrying at least 50 people early Saturday when it hit a double-decker boat carrying at least 30 passengers and cargo. The accident happened about 34 kilometers southwest of Rangoon.
Rescue workers are searching for at least four missing people.
Boat accidents are common in river deltas and the coastal regions in Burma. In March, 16 people died when their boat capsized about 60 kilometers south of Rangoon.
