Burmese Government Prepares for First National Census

The military-ruled government of Burma is preparing for its first national census in more than 20 years.

Burma has only taken the census twice since gaining independence from Britain in 1948.

The Myanmar Times reported Sunday that the Immigration and Population Department is receiving monetary and technical assistance from the United Nations Population Fund.

In recent years, population estimates have been based on partial surveys.

Burma's current population is estimated to be around 47 million.
