A top official of Burma's government says the military will eventually hand power to a civilian government after an election in line with the new constitution.
The ruling military government's First Secretary Lt-General Thein Sein's comments were quoted in Monday's edition of the state-run "New Light of Myanmar" newspaper.
He said the constitution would be approved after a referendum, and an election would follow in accordance with laws.
A report in the Irrawaddy Online website says the general made no mention of an election held in 1990 that was won overwhelmingly by the opposition, but was ignored by the military group that runs the country.
