Burma Appoints Ambassador to North Korea

Burma's state media say the country has appointed its ambassador to China to also serve as its chief envoy to North Korea.

The "New Light of Myanmar" says Burma's military government has named Thein Lwin ambassador to North Korea.

North Korea and Burma re-established diplomatic relations in April during a visit to Burma by North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Yong II.

Burma had cut ties with Pyongyang in 1983, after North Korean commandos were blamed for a deadly bombing in Rangoon during a visit by former South Korea
President Chun Doo-hwan.

Mr. Chun was unhurt in the bombing, but at least 20 people were killed and many others were wounded.
