Roh to Travel by Land to Summit in North Korea

South Korean officials say President Roh Moo-hyun will travel by land to North Korea for a rare meeting with leader Kim Jong Il later this month.

Representatives from both countries agreed that Mr. Roh will cross the heavily fortified border by motorcade, rather than by train as Seoul initially proposed. They discussed the plans today in the North Korean border city of Kaesong.

Officials say South Korea will send about 200 delegates to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, for the three-day talks starting August 28th.

The leaders are expected to discuss economic cooperation and North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

North and South Korea leaders last held talks in 2000, at the first inter-Korean summit since their 1950s war, which ended in an armistice.

South Korea says it will delay upcoming military drills in a bid to improve conditions for the summit.

South Korea had planned the drills to coincide with joint U.S. - South Korean military exercises set for the last two weeks in August.

But Defense Ministry officials in Seoul said Monday the South Korean drills will take place after the North and South Korean leaders meet. The joint exercises will go ahead as scheduled.
