Chinese media say Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, in a phone call with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, expressed great concern about the situation in Burma.
The Xinhua news agency today reports that Mr. Wen said China hopes all parties involved in the conflict in Burma show restraint, peacefully resume stability, and achieve democracy and development.
China has many economic interests in Burma, and has influence with its military government.
Officials from the United States, Britain and the European Union have been urging China to increase pressure on Burma's leaders to stop a violent crackdown on protesters.
But China has so far shown reluctance to engage Burma, blocking past efforts by the United Nations Security Council to censure the military government.
