NLD Calls for Effective UN Role in Burma - 2002-10-17

In an interview with VOA Burmese Service Thursday, NLD spokesperson U Lwin talked about Aung San Suu Kyi's recent successful Pegu Division tour. He also gave his insights on the child soldiers issue in Burma, saying that the problem is real. He said the dire economic situation in the country is hitting hard the man in the street with looting and daylight robberies, which are now becoming common.

With regard to UN Special Human Rights Rapporteur Paulo Sergio Pinheiro's scheduled investigation on the allegations of rape in the Shan State, U Lwin wished him well although he could not imagine a comprehensive outcome from this solo effort by the UN envoy.

Emphasizing the historical ineffectual role of the UN in Burma, in a general sense, the NLD spokesman expressed his frustration and hoped that the concerted efforts by the resident UN agencies could bring about happier results all round.
