U.S. officials say no decision has been made on whether to remove Burma from a list of major drug producers.
State Department deputy spokesman Phillip Reeker told reporters Friday that President Bush will make a final determination on Burma's status in the next few months.
This comes after the Washington Post newspaper published a report saying that State Department officials are close to recommending that Burma no longer be listed as one of the world's biggest exporters of narcotics. Such a move would need to be reviewed by the White House.
VOA Burmese also examined and responded to an editorial placed in the Washington Post that criticized the potential change in policy, citing that the move would praise the Burmese government and undermine Aung San Suu Kyi's efforts at democracy.
