Q: What is Bindi? He noticed it on Buddha's forehead as well. (U Win Myint Aung, North Dagon Township, Rangoon)

Dear U Win Myint Aung,

The Bindi is an auspicious makeup worn on the forehead by Hindu girls and women. The word bindi comes from the Sanskrit "bindu" which mean a dot or a point. It is made of vermilion which is composed of bright red mercuric sulfide.

Traditionally a symbol of marriage, it has now become a decorative item and is worn today by unmarried girls and women of other religious as well. Quoted a poem dedicated to Bindi and the beauty of Women by Hindi Poet Bihari.

Since Buddha was an Indian origin, it appears in every Buddha's statues as a symbol of peace, sign of focus of the mind and determination of ideas.
