Saks Sacks Burmese Products - 2003-03-13

A U.S. human rights group says it has successfully convinced a major U.S. retailer to stop accepting products made in Burma.

The Free Burma Coalition says Saks, which owns the "Saks Fifth Avenue" retail chain, agreed this week to no longer sell and stock Burmese-made items.

The group has called on leading U.S. retailers to no longer sell Burmese-made products to avoid providing money for the country's military government and to protest the country's poor human rights record.

The U.S. State Department has accused Burma's garment industry of using child and forced labor.
