A United Nations investigator assessing the human rights situation in Burma has started interviewing political prisoners.
The interviews by the Brazilian UN official Paulo Sergio Pinheiro came during his fifth visit to Burma. He had already met with officials, including the number three in the military government, General Khin Nyunt.
Last week, he met with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. She complained that Mr. Pinheiro strayed from his mandate by recommending that the international community should engage the military government.
The French news agency reported that Mr. Pinheiro complained that he found bugging equipment in a room where he was conducting interviews with the political prisoners. The interviews are supposed to be private.
