Service chief Khin Maung Htay interviewed U.N. spokesperson Hua Jiang on U.N human rights envoy Paulo Sergio Pinheiro’s decision to suspend his mission to Burma after finding, what he said, was, a bugging device in a room where he was conducting confidential interviews with political prisoners.
When he reported the incident to the Burmese authorities they expressed regret and gave assurances that it would be fully investigated.
U.N. spokesperson Ms. Hua Jiang said, during his press conference before he left Rangoon, “he (Mr. Pinheiro) did say that all persons who are cooperating with him should be free from any form of intimidation and he said that the authorities had reaffirmed their commitment to those principles.
However, he hasn’t categorically said that he will never return to the country again. So, the door is still open.”
