A British diplomat has criticized Burma's military government for failing to try to reconcile with its citizens in the year since democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was freed.
Wednesday marked the first anniversary of Aung San Suu Kyi's release from house arrest.
British Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien used the occasion to criticize Senior General Than Shwe for failing to engage in dialogue with the National League for Democracy. He described it as a wasted year for the people of Burma.
Mr. O'Brien welcomed the recent release of 21 political prisoners and urged the government to accept a visit from a United Nations special envoy.
