Interview With An Outstanding Burmese Student - 2003-05-25


Mary Baldwin College granted 287 degrees in the 161 st. Commencement ceremonies held Sunday, May 18.

Ma Khin Oo of Rangoon, Burma received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Student Award recognizing unselfish service, noble character, and spiritual qualities — and the accompanying Mary Keith Fitzroy Award.

She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Ma Khin Oo talked about her life at the College where as the president of Cosmos International, a student organization, she coordinated international events to promote diversity .

Ma Khin Oo also talked about the difficulties she had to overcome as a teaching assistant . She also wrote articles and spoke in support of democracy in her country. Ma Khin Oo said, “ Whenever, my spirits are down, I think about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her courage.”

Ma Khin Oo said she plans to serve as an intern for a year and then continue with her graduate studies before returning to Burma to help in the transition to democracy.
