At the Foreign Ministers Forum of Association of Southeast Asia Nations in Phnom Pehn, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell gave a strong message to Burma following the recent violent clash and the ultimate detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Burmese Foreign Minister U Win Aung responded that the detention was a temporary measure and that the military government was, in his words, “not brutal nor heartless.”
The State Department also released a statement entitled “Burma-Birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi” in which it conveys Secretary Powell’s greetings. The statement concluded “We salute Aung San Suu Kyi and hope that future birthdays find her living free in a free Burma.”
We conclude this week program with a VOA editorial entitled “Release Aung San Suu Kyi.”
