Burma's number three leader has dismissed sanctions against his country as wicked schemes of the West.
The New Light of Myanmar newspaper today (Wednesday) quoted General Khin Nyunt, the chief of military intelligence, as saying that Burma is determined to overcome the obstacles no matter how they disrupt the country.
At a ceremony Tuesday to accept donated medical equipment, the general said Burma would emerge unharmed by relying on internal strength and the friendly neighboring countries in the region.
The United States and other Western nations have imposed economic and political sanctions against Burma in an attempt to pressure the junta into releasing detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
