United Nations officials say special envoy Razali Ismail is still trying to set up a visit to Burma later this month to check on the condition of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
No date has been set for the visit and the military government has not yet agreed to allow Mr. Razali to see the democracy leader.
Mr. Razali, a veteran Malaysian diplomat, last saw the 57-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate in early June.
She and several leaders of her National League for Democracy have been detained since the end of May, when a group of her supporters clashed with a pro-Rangoon mob during a political tour in northern Burma.
